Stargate Universe thoughts
Wow Holy (Multiple!) Cliffhangers Batman! What a wild ride the last few episodes leading up to last nights season finale have been for fans of the SyFy channel series Stargate Universe. My wife and I have been devout fans of the previous two Stargate series both which have aired on SyFy channel in the past 10 Seasons of Stargate SG-1 and 5 Seasons of Stargate Atlantis. The premise for Stargate Universe (SGU) is based off of story plots and elements from the previous two series (for those not familiar with the Stargate franchise you might want to start here first for information regarding the entire franchise).
Unlike the previous incarnations of Stargate this one didn’t have a lead-in story line like Stargate Atlantis or any actors crossing over to start it off aside from the guest stars Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping and a brief glimpse of Micheal Shanks all three from the SG-1 Series. The idea of starting a show of this was is both very risky and exciting at the same time. I’d have to say after now seeing the first season of the show its been worth the risk and the reward is the second season which is already filming. The first half of the season dealt with the things the crew of the Destiny (An ancient ship left behind hundreds of thousands of years ago in another part of the universe) would need in order to survive and give us both new and old fans a chance to meet the group of survivors which consisted of both Air Force members and Civilians. A couple of characters that jumped out right away at me were Dr. Nicolas Rush played by the charming Robert Carlyle and Master Sgt. Ronald Greer played by Jamil Walker Smith. These two individuals really came across as conflicted people that weren’t bad guys or good guys but just riding the grey line between each. I’d have to say this is something in which I like a lot about the series but the previously mentioned individuals are right now the two characters I just love watching on the screen.
Other characters include Everett Young played by Louis Ferreira, Matthew Scott played by Brian J. Smith, Tamara Johansen played by Alania Huffman of Smallville Fame, Eli Wallace played by David Blue, Chole Armstrong played by Elyse Levesque, and Camille Wray played by Ming-Na of ER fame. Each of these individuals seem to have their own ideas/agenda of how things should be run now that they are stranded on the other side of the universe and are all equally as talented. Now that the season has concluded and watching the back 10 episodes the story/plot pace definitely picked up the toward the finale which fans both old and new agreed was lacking during the first half of the season but was necessary to give us a back story of who these folks are and how they plan to survive just with the basics (Air, Food, Water, Power). The series in my opinion is worth watching if you like some drama and some amazing character driven stories with some Sci-Fi mixed in. I can’t wait for Season 2 which is coming this October on SyFy channel. If you haven’t already you can check out the first season by clicking on the link below to be taken to the iTunes store and be able to see a preview of the show.
